Julian Lennon is opening up about feeling disconnected from the Beatles, saying he has always felt like an outsider—starting in childhood. In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 61-year-old son of John Lennon and Cynthia Lennon revealed he has never been part of the band's "inner circle," nor has he ever felt closely tied to Beatles-related activities.
Julian said, "When Dad left, when I was three or five years old, it was just Mum and me. We had nothing to do with the Beatles or Dad. I went to see him occasionally, but we were very much on the outside." Julian has a close relationship with his half-brother, Sean Ono Lennon, but he doesn't have a close relationship with his father's bandmates. "We're best buddies," he said, adding that Sean keeps him informed about Beatles projects whenever he can.
Julian praises his late mother, Cynthia—who died away in 2015 from cancer—for training him to manage life's problems with grace. He remarked, "I believe it was Mum, seeing how she dealt with what was dealt to her, with love and grace." "The only way is to persevere, even though I still struggle with severe anxiety occasionally and have had my share of depressive episodes." Julian, who is a talented musician himself, named his 2022 album Jude after the Beatles song "Hey Jude," which Paul McCartney composed to comfort him during his parents' divorce.
